The International Academy of Ocularistry completed our fourth annual meeting in San Diego.

The feedback from attendees was overwhelmingly positive.  People liked San Diego and The Pendry Hotel.  Many enjoyed all the activities that San Diego has to offer including the Midway Museum, the Zoo and Animal Park.  The Gas Lamp district has numerous great restaurants within walking distance of The Pendry Hotel and is a short cab ride from the airport.  Kevin and Maureen did an onsite to The Pendry several years ago and, as usual, steered us to a great venue that meets all of the IAO’s requirements for the meeting.

Caroline O’Neill, our program chair for this meeting, put together an outstanding array of speakers.  Great job CJ, thank you.

Those who attended enjoyed the small intimate group where interaction between speakers and the audience was stimulating and continued to educate.

We had attendees from Argentina, Canada, Mexico, New Zealand, Spain, the United Kingdom and the United States.  A truly international group.

Our speakers were outstanding!  I especially enjoyed Monica and Bernardo’s joint lecture, where Bernardo translated for Monica.  The Pinotti’s showed such courage and willingness to share in spite of the language challenge.  Our Keynote speaker, Keith Pine BS, MBA, PhD, MIMPT, presented much evidence based research that fit in perfectly with the IAO’s mission and vision statements.

The conference was authorized for 65 credits by NEBO, but one talk was shorter than expected so attendees who wanted NEBO credits will receive 62 credits, which is 12 more than the 50 credits per year NEBO requires to maintain board certification.  Drew Hetzler was instrumental in working with NEBO to get our speakers certified by them in order to get the necessary CE credits.  NEBO charged the IAO $7,000 to certify the credits for our meeting.  Those who chose to receive the NEBO credits paid $334 each. The amount was determined by those seeking to receive the credits divided by $7,000.

I want to also recognize and thank German Acerbi, our newest trustee and keeper of the website for his timely and knowledgeable work on getting the word out to attendees and members and for setting up the portal to allow for those who wanted NEBO credits to be able to do so at the meeting.  Our treasurer, Donnie Franklin, was not able to attend at the last minute due to a family emergency.  German has also provided wise counsel to the board.   Muchas gracias German!

Our next meeting will most likely be in South Florida.  The location and the fact it is a hub for many airlines and easy to get to for attendees from the east and European attendees make it a good place to have our eastern meeting.  Kevin Schou will be working to find a hotel that suits our needs and is reasonably priced. As soon as a contract is signed the dates and location will be posted on the website. Our 2022 meeting we will be back in San Diego at The Pendry.  Attendees were unanimous in their desire for both locations for future meetings.

The Board of Trustees wishes to thank all who attended this meeting.  Your continued support of the mission and vision statements and the active participation with speakers was very rewarding and appreciated.

My Best Regards to All,

Doss K. Tannehill, BS, BCO, FIAO
